Why you may need to wait for your flu vaccine this year

Flu can be serious for some people, and those most at risk of complications should have a flu vaccine every year. The people caring for them should also have an annual flu vaccination to help protect them from catching and spreading flu. This winter it is especially important, as flu and COVID-19 (coronavirus) will both be in circulation.

Those currently eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine include

  • people with a long term health condition
  • anyone with a learning disability
  • everyone aged 65 and over (age on 31 March 2021)
  • pregnant women, children aged two to ten years old (age on 31 August 2020)
  • carers, domiciliary carers and care home staff with regular client contact
  • care home residents
  • children age 2-10 years (on 31 Aug 2020)

There is enough flu vaccine for all these eligible groups to get vaccinated before the flu season starts, which is usually in December. Demand for vaccination has been high this year. Additional infection prevention and control measures in GP surgeries and community pharmacies to help keep people safe, also means appointments take slightly longer than usual.

GP surgeries and community pharmacies everywhere are experiencing lots of enquiries, and some people are being asked to wait longer than usual for an appointment. Enough vaccines will be available for all of those currently recommended to have one.

There are different types of flu vaccine available and some work better for different age groups. Vaccine is delivered in batches over several weeks. This means that some people may be offered a flu vaccine if it is available and others will be asked to wait until the best vaccine based on their age is in stock. It is better to wait and get the right vaccine for you so that you get the most benefit from it.

Flu vaccine should ideally be given before flu starts to circulate and that is not normally before December.

GP surgeries and community pharmacies are working hard to offer vaccinations as soon as they have supplies. There is enough vaccine and more appointments will become available.

Pam bydd rhaid i chi aros am

Gall y ffliw fod yn ddifrifol i rai pobl a dylai'r rhai sy’n wynebu’r perygl mwyaf o gymhlethdodau gael brechiad y ffliw bob blwyddyn. Dylai'r bobl sy'n gofalu amdanynt gael brechiad ffliw blynyddol hefyd, i helpu i'w diogelu rhag dal a lledaenu'r ffliw. Y gaeaf hwn mae'n arbennig o bwysig, gan y bydd y ffliw a COVID-19 (y coronafeirws) yn bodoli ochr yn ochr â’i gilydd.

Mae'r rhai sy'n gymwys ar hyn o bryd i gael brechiad ffliw am ddim gan y GIG yn cynnwys y canlynol:

  • pobl â chyflwr iechyd tymor hir
  • unrhyw un ag anabledd dysgu
  • pawb 65 oed a hŷn (oedran ar 31 Mawrth 2021)
  • merched beichiog, plant rhwng dwy a deng mlwydd oed (oedran ar 31 Awst 2020)
  • gofalwyr, gofalwyr cartref a staff cartrefi gofal sydd â chyswllt rheolaidd â chleientiaid
  • preswylwyr cartrefi gofal
  • plant 2 i 10 oed (ar 31 Awst 2020)

Mae digon o frechiad y ffliw i'r holl grwpiau cymwys yma gael eu brechu cyn i dymor y ffliw ddechrau, sydd fel arfer ym mis Rhagfyr. Mae'r galw am frechiadau wedi bod yn uchel eleni. Mae mesurau atal a rheoli heintiau ychwanegol mewn meddygfeydd a fferyllfeydd cymunedol i helpu i gadw pobl yn ddiogel hefyd yn golygu bod apwyntiadau'n cymryd ychydig mwy o amser nag arfer.

Mae meddygfeydd a fferyllfeydd cymunedol ym mhob man yn cael llawer o ymholiadau, a gofynnir i rai pobl aros mwy nag arfer am apwyntiad. Bydd digon o frechiadau ar gael i’r rhai sy’n cael eu hargymell i gael brechiad ar hyn o bryd.

Mae gwahanol fathau o frechiad ffliw ar gael ac mae rhai'n gweithio'n well ar gyfer gwahanol grwpiau oedran. Mae'r brechiad yn cael ei ddarparu mewn sypiau dros nifer o wythnosau. Mae hyn yn golygu y gellir cynnig brechiad y ffliw i rai pobl os yw ar gael a gofynnir i eraill aros nes bod y brechiad gorau ar gyfer eu hoedran hwy mewn stoc. Mae'n well aros a chael y brechiad iawn i chi er mwyn i chi gael y budd gorau ohono.

Yn ddelfrydol, dylid rhoi brechiad y ffliw cyn i'r ffliw ddechrau cylchredeg ac nid yw hynny cyn mis Rhagfyr fel arfer.

Mae meddygfeydd a fferyllfeydd cymunedol yn gweithio'n galed i gynnig brechiadau cyn gynted ag y bydd ganddynt gyflenwadau. Mae digon o frechiadau a bydd mwy o apwyntiadau ar gael yn fuan.
